Washington State’s growing space cluster is nurturing its own future workforce with the Tesla STEM program for high school students.
Aerojet Rocketdyne, a rocket manufacturer in Redmond, Washington, is providing guidance to a 40 student program as they design and build their own fully functional rocket.
This is the only high school rocket program in the country that has been invited to compete with universities at the Utah State University Space Dynamics Lab in June. The students are involved in every aspect or rocket science, from design and analysis to fabrication and testing.

From mining asteroids and colonizing Mars, to consumer space travel and reuseable rockets, Washington State is pioneering a wide range of space exploration efforts. Washington State has a deep commitment to producing a highly skilled aerospace workforce. At the community and technical college level customized training programs that address critical and emerging skills are meeting the future needs of the aerospace cluster. The high school students in the Tesla STEM program are getting early exposure to the formal engineering process and will become leaders in rocket science and space exploration.
